Preparing for the Spring Season: Protecting Your Engine from the Consequences of Winter Operation

Preparing for the Spring Season: Protecting Your Engine from the Consequences of Winter Operation

At the end of the winter period, passenger car owners face a typical issue — condensation buildup in the lubrication system. During short trips and frequent cold starts in unstable spring temperatures (+5…+10 °C during the day, frost at night), moisture condenses on the crankcase walls, mixing with incomplete fuel combustion byproducts. This creates an aggressive environment that promotes corrosion of piston group components and accelerated engine wear.

Turbocharged engines are particularly vulnerable in early spring: accumulated moisture combined with residual coke deposits on the turbocharger rotor increases the risk of bearing assembly seizure under subsequent loads.

To minimize risks, a scheduled oil change is recommended, switching to a formulation that provides:

  • Stable low-temperature properties (viscosity at –30 °C no more than 6600 mPa·s) for reliable starting during morning frosts;
  • High viscosity index (at least 160) to maintain the protective film during temperature fluctuations;
  • A balanced package of anti-corrosion additives meeting ACEA A3/B4 or ACEA C3 requirements.

The PEXOL passenger car range includes solutions that meet these criteria:

PEXOL P3 5W-40 – For spring maintenance after winter.

  • Fully synthetic High SAPS motor oil for gasoline and diesel engines without particulate filters (DPF/FAP).
  • Provides reliable protection under high loads, for turbocharged engines, and extended drain intervals.
  • A high base number neutralizes the effects of condensation.
  • Ideal for the premium VW/Audi/Porsche fleet without Euro 5/6 eco-standards.

A scheduled oil change in March allows you to remove accumulated contaminants and condensation, as well as switch to a formulation optimally adapted to spring-summer operating conditions. This helps preserve engine life and prevents the need for costly repairs at 100–150 thousand km.

Before choosing oil, it is recommended to consult a service specialist or use the online oil selection service by make and model.
